There is no official list of the "main AI engines." For businesses, however, five systems are currently worth understanding and tracking where they are relevant to the audience: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. They do not all work the same way, and they do not necessarily use the web for every answer.
In this article, AI engine is a practical label for services that generate AI answers and, in some features, can use information from the web. It is not a formal shared category, and this list is not exhaustive. Systems such as Microsoft Copilot may also matter for particular audiences. These services do not all work the same way, and there is no single source-selection algorithm shared across them.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT can search the web when a question benefits from current or external information, either automatically or when the user selects Search. Answers that use web search can include citations and links to sources.
For a business, it is more useful to test real customer questions such as:
"I'm looking for an accounting firm in Kozani for a sole proprietorship. Which firms publicly state that they support myDATA, and what information can I check before getting in touch?"
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
AI Overviews and AI Mode are features of Google Search, not separate search engines outside Google.
AI Overviews can display an AI-generated summary with information and links when Google's systems determine that it may be useful. AI Mode is Google's more conversational search experience, supporting more complex questions, follow-ups, and exploration across multiple sources.
For a business, the important point is that these AI features now sit directly inside Google Search and can surface links to public sources.
Gemini
Gemini is Google's standalone AI app and should not be confused with AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Gemini can display sources or relevant links in some answers, although source use is not identical across every feature. In Deep Research, Google Search is included as a source by default unless the user changes the selected sources.
So, when you measure presence in Gemini, you need to record not only whether a business was mentioned but also whether that specific answer used or displayed public sources.
Perplexity
Perplexity describes itself as an AI-powered search engine. It searches the web and provides answers accompanied by citations and links to the original sources.
This makes it easier for users to see which sources support the answer. That alone does not mean Perplexity users have higher purchase intent or are mainly professionals.
If you want to evaluate it for your own business, ask the same real questions you would ask the other systems and see which sources are used and whether the information is correct.
Claude
Claude supports web search and, when that capability is used, its responses include citations and links to sources.
It is worth including Claude in your measurement if you know that part of your audience or professional environment uses it. The ability to search and cite is not on its own enough to draw conclusions about the quality of the answers or the profile of its audience.
Which one should you focus on?
There is no single right answer for all businesses.
Start with how your audience actually searches, then test a small, consistent set of natural questions across more than one platform.
For example:
"I need a commercial cleaning company in Kozani. Which businesses publicly state that they handle such premises, and what can I check before requesting a quote?"
For each check, record:
- which platform you used,
- whether a web search was performed,
- whether the business appeared,
- which sources appeared,
- whether the information was accurate,
- what important information was missing.
You do not need a different version of the same content for every system. What matters is that your public information is complete, specific, and consistent. The technical requirements and the way sources are accessed may differ per platform, so you shouldn't assume that a change works the same way everywhere.
If you want us to look at which systems really make sense for your case, we start from your customers' questions and the public information that exists today.
The work around AEO can improve the completeness, accuracy and consistency of this information. It does not guarantee appearance, citation, mention, recommendation or a specific position in ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini or any other AI system.
